PostHeaderIcon Beat The Winter Blues on Lanzarote

Banishing the winter blues these days is a reasonably easy thing to do. Due to the introduction of cheap flights to Lanzarote, it is now possible to visit the Canarian island all year round without paying exorbitant fares. The archipelago of seven islands located just off the coast of Mauritania has an enviable climate that makes it the warmest part of Europe by some distance, especially in the winter months.

Lanzarote
in particular makes an excellent destination due to the difference in the way it has responded to tourism over the last forty years. Unlike the neighbouring islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, large scale hotel and apartment complex developments have been restricted, with no high rise buildings allowed.

So its coastal resorts are low-key, full of white-washed houses and planted with tropical flowers and palms. Making a holiday in apartments in Lanzarote a very pleasant base from which to explore the island. And the reasonable price of accommodation in Lanzarote is another factor in its favour, leaving more euros to spend on dining out, hiring a car or one of the many excursions on offer.

For an island of such small dimensions, there is a surprising amount to see and do. Everything from hiring a yacht with a skipper to taking a course in surfing can be arranged during your stay. With a great range of activities also available for children, such as a camel ride through part of the volcano park or a visit to the water park.

Whilst for serious sports enthusiasts, the clement climate with its dry air and moderate breezes is the ideal environment for training in. This is one of the reasons why the Iron Man competition takes place on Lanzarote every year.
And why athletes from around the world come to train at Club La Santa.

But there is also plenty to do that isn’t sport related. Such as taking a guided tour through the historic town of Teguise, the oldest town in the Canaries, which is packed with colonial style buildings and cobbled streets. Or visiting one of several museums that documents the lives of former inhabitants, showing their resilience in scratching a living from what must have been a fairly inhospitable place.

In stark contrast, the visitors who arrive on Lanzarote today have a great range of restaurants, cafes and bars to dine in, including several that are incredibly atmospheric. Such as LagOmar, the former home of Omar Sharif, or the Castillo de San José which is now an art museum and restaurant but used to be a fort protecting Arrecife.
