A Trek Through Sapa The Northern Mountains Of Vietnam

The night is cool and crisp and we are boarding our train from Hanoi Vietnam to the northern mountain town of Sapa. Our train is a modern overnight sleeper; clean comfortable and sparkling white. The rest of the station is like stepping back in time. Ancient boxcars darkened by time are parked in the yard and steam is rising in the air. People donning conical hats are huddled around open fires. Some squat on small plastic stools eating noodle soup with chopsticks. As I look out the window I feel as though it is 1969.

We are led to our bunks by a petite and quiet women from ODC Travel. The company based in Hanoi where we booked our fourday threenight excursion. For 75 each all meals accommodation and transportation are included in our trip to see the magnificent rice terraces and to experience the traditional lives of the hill tribes of Sapa.

It is not long until I am peacefully sleeping. Rocking with the rhythm of the train I dream of the adventure ahead. 4:30 am arrives quickly however and I awake famished and thankful for the complimentary sweet bread and bottled water.

We have arrived in Lao Cao a small town on the Chinese border. As I step onto the platform a brisk cold wind awakens my senses. Luckily a van is waiting to take us the rest of the way so we don’t have to wait in the morning chill for long.

It is a harrowing journey up the winding mountain road. We put our lives in the hands of our speeding driver who dodges herds of water buffalo oncoming traffic and local villagers herding their oxen. Whizzing around each corner we are thankful to not have plunged off of a vertical cliff into the deep valley below.

We arrive a little shaken but all in one piece to our hotel where we meet our guide Xin. He is a friendly young man who grew up in the area and as we will soon learn enjoys singing and playing the guitar. We will be spending the next two days with him as he takes us through the mountains to visit the Hmong and Dzai People who live among the rice terraces.

The morning is beautiful. The sun in shining the chill is gone and the blue sky is full of fluffy white clouds. After some tea and a hot breakfast we shed our layers and begin our journey into the hills.

The scenery is magnificent and as we venture farther from the town my breath is taken away by the incredible view unfolding. Thousands of rice terraces filled with water glisten in the sun for as far as the eye can see. Every turn becomes more overwhelming and I am struck with awe by the giant terraced mountains surrounding me.

Barking dogs guard their territory as we pass and gaggles of ducks waddle by following their leader with frenzied dedication. Villagers from the Hmong Tribe speed past us carrying heavy loads in their woven baskets. They walk with ease as I gasp for air climbing the steep path. As we continue to hike Xin tell us about the people and the history of the land and how it has changed.

The Hmong village we are visiting has come to depend on tourism and he tells us not to feel pressured to give money or to buy jewelry to the people who will be approaching us. Not wanting to contribute to a begging society I chose not to give children the “bonbons” that they have come to expect or to give money for nothing. Instead I gladly buy some silver bracelets from a lady who invites us into her home for a glimpse of tribal life.

The house is stuffy and dark and a fire is burning in the kitchen. We huddle around the flame as Xin points out that the Hmong people have two fires in their dwellings one for cooking the other for warmth. Many generations live together under one roof and the house consists of a large open room. It is a fascinating experience but I feel a little uneasy to be staring at these people who have put their lives on display.

Leaving the Hmong Villages behind we venture farther away from Sapa and deeper into the mountains. I am relieved to not have people pestering me for money and no more children asking me for candy.

We make our way to the top of a mountain where Xin puts out a picnic lunch and we dine among a herd of water buffalo. As we look into the deep valley children stop by for a visit and we share some cookies and fruit. It is a place of overwhelming beauty.

The contentment is short lived however because we have a lot of ground to cover to make it to the village of the Dzai people where we will be spending the night. Being farther away from Sapa and not a part of the usual oneday tours this tribe is less corrupted by the tourism industry. They are completely selfsufficient at harnessing water from mountain runoff for irrigation. They grow their own rice sugar cane peanuts and vegetables. Every child attends school they raise their own livestock and weave and dye their own fabric for clothing. This is truly a people who are at one with the land.

We stay with a family that has four generations living under one roof. Their house built by the hands of villagers using traditional methods is gigantic and surprisingly cozy in the brisk mountain air. It takes one year to build a home and everybody pitches in.

We are treated to a feast after we settle in and enjoy their friendly hospitality. The 94yearold grandfather keeps my plate full urging me to eat more and we stuff ourselves until we cannot move. After dinner the rice wine is served and they will not take no for an answer. So it is “bottoms up all night”. Xin translates for us as we tell them about our country and they tell us about their way of life.

Later that evening we walk to visit other houses and the celebrations continue. Rice wine is flowing as we sit around the fire in their kitchens singing songs. The local people are eager to hear songs from our country and there is no getting out of belting out a tune. They applaud with enthusiasm and then Xin treats us to a traditional Vietnamese folk song before heading back to bed.

It is a cool night but we sleep well under a thick warm blanket and awake a little groggy from the abundance of alcohol the night before.

Saying goodbye to our hosts after a breakfast of fried eggs and a warm baguette we slowly walk to the mountains feeling the burn in our legs from the day before. We trek to the high waterfall overlooking the valley walk through a bamboo forest and once again witness the beauty of gigantic rice terraces.

A jeep picks us up at the end of our trek to take us back to Sapa where we sleep comfortably that evening in our small hotel. Our last day is spent exploring this beautiful town. We hike up Ham Rong Mountain to see its many gardens and stone forest shop for fresh fruit in the market and relax on a terrace overlooking the mountains. The people are friendly and as usual the scenery is magnificent.

Northern Vietnam is a fascinating experience. It is rich in culture and history and diverse in landscape. Vietnam will surprise you sometimes shock you but it will always keep you enthralled.

African Hunting Safari Adventure

Kabra Safaris African hunting are quoted as being leaders in hunting game on the African plans and going on dangerous game hunting safaris. They offer some of the best hunting areas available to you in Africa. They have been in business for over ten years and are constantly trying to improve their services in the countries of South Africa Zimbabwe Namibia and also Mozambique.

Their goal is to make sure that you go on the best hunting safari for the lowest price possible to you. And always try to make sure that you get the best value for your money. When it comes to the plains game hunting safaris they are normally done in two different regions in South Africa which are Limpopo and Northern Kalahari. Their dangerous game hunting safaris on the other hand are done from the valley of Zambezi in the north to a river in the south called Molopo.

However many veterans are getting tired of the same safaris so they are offering many new adventures such as new African plains opportunities available in Mozambique and Namibia. Now they have rifle hunting and also now hunting game plains areas. In those areas you can hunt leopards and Cape buffalo. These cosmopolitan centers offer everything from top of the line entertainment to truly fine dining to lodging accommodations with all of the very latest amenities. Therefore no Australia vacation really can be considered complete without spending time in one or another or more than one of the vibrant cities in the country.

Why Do I Go To Turkey?

There are so many reasons why I visit Turkey every year for my holidays . . .

The Turkish people are welcoming hospitable and funny; their sense of humour is very similar to the British sense of humour and can be quite dry. In comparison to some countries if you try to speak the language the Turkish are impressed and are grateful that you have made an effort to learn even a few words. Just learning a few basic words and phrases will lighten up the faces of an already congenial people.

Turkey is abundant in ancient history and has been home to the Lycians Romans and Byzantians to name but a few. Ancient ruins are commonplace and if you are staying near Dalyan I would recommend visiting the Lycian rock tombs and nearby city of Kaunos where you can see a ruined Byzantian church or sit in the amphitheatre there is also an abundance of wildlife to see as well.

Food! Say goodbye to fish and chips and say hello to fish and chips . . . okay some resorts do cater for the UK market but even these resorts offer a plethora of mouthwatering Turkish cuisine. Slow roasted lamb shank is a particular favourite and with most resorts being close to the sea there is copious amounts of fresh sea food however my preferred dish is Kofte meatballs washed down with raki a local aniseed drink. Tomatoes! There are mountains of them in Turkey to don’t be surprised if they accompany nearly every course.

The weather in Turkey is at its hottest during the months of July amp; August and can be too much for some if this is the case visit during May/June or September/October. During October it is advisable to take a jumper when you go out on the evening as it can get a little chilly. Whatever you do don’t forget the sun screen!

If you like a bit of retail therapy after the stress of lying by the pool then Turkey has bargains to fill another suitcase! From the weekly markets where you can buy “genuine fake” designer clothes at great prices to the opulent jewellery shops in the larger resorts you are guaranteed to find a bargain. Don’t be afraid to haggle as it is an accepted practice you may feel uncomfortable the first few times but your inhibitions will disappear when you realise what you are saving and how much fun you can have.

Enjoy Turkey!

Visit Paris Museums Off The Tourist Track

Sure you know about the Louvre and the Impressionists at the Musee d’Orsay but are you familiar with the Marmatton? Or Paris’ Cluny Museum on the Left Bank? In addition to the famous “first tier” museums the city of light offers scores of fascinating and less crowded smaller museums. Whether this your second or third or fourth trip to Paris or if you just want to try something a little different consider visiting one of these exciting lesserknown Paris museums.

Marmatton

Located west of downtown Paris in the stylish and affluent 16th arrondissement lies the Marmatton Museum a small gem of a museum filled with the works of Impressionist painter Claude Monet and his talented friends. Named for the owner of the spacious 19thcentury town house that houses the museum the Marmatton’s collection is centered on a group of 65 Monet paintings bequeathed to it by the painter’s son Michel in 1965. This core grouping includes “Impression Sunrise” the painting that gave a name to the entire art movement as well as one of Monet’s series of Rouen Cathedral studies.

The highlight of the collection however is the large number of water lily paintings of Monet’s garden at Giverny done late in Monet’s life mostly from memory as he had lost most of his eyesight. These massive canvasses are displayed in a round gallery where they virtually envelop the viewer. The Marmatton also contains a number of paintings from Monet’s personal art collection including works by Pissarro Renoir and Sisley. The walk through the park from the Muette metro stop to the museum is a lovely throwback to the 19th century and helps to set the scene for a museum visit.

Le Carnavalet

Paris’ Musee Carnavalet dedicated to the history of Paris is housed in a unique Parisian 16thcentury mansion. The luxury town house with a typical French center courtyard was once home to Madame de Sevigny noted for her detailed letters to her daughter more than 1500 of them that tell of Parisian life in the late 17th century. The museum is located in the trendy Marais neighborhood just steps away from the Place des Vosges.

Rarely crowded the Musee Carnavalet is an intriguing mixture of old and new. Entire rooms have been recreated within the museum such as an 18th century Louis XIVstyle salon complete with goldleaf paneling and the Art Deco early 20th century ballroom from the Hotel de Wendel. Other of the 140 rooms are devoted to such things as prehistoric artifacts from the Parisii tribe who once inhabited the Ile de la Cite souvenirs from the Revolution antique maps and important paintings as well as the furniture from the room where Marcel Proust wrote his lengthy “A Recherche du Temps Perdu.” There is also a spectacular ceiling painted by the French muralist Le Brun. The gardens too are spectacular and are a pleasant oasis in the middle of the bustling city.

The Paris Fashion Museum

Brigitte Bardot’s Dior wedding dress a classic 1930s Chanel wool suit and a robe worn by stage legend Sarah Bernhardt: These are just some of the treasures to be found at Paris’ Musee du Mode et du Costume. Located in a 19thcentury Renaissancestyle town house this threestory museum’s collection includes more than 100000 outfits dating from the 18th century to the present. Such fashionable women as Princess Grace of Monaco the Duchess of Windsor and Baronne Helene de Rothschild have contributed to the museum as have renowned designers including Balmain Givenchy and Balenciaga.

Because clothing is so delicate and because the collection is so vast the displays are rotated several times a year usually arranged to focus on one time period or one designer’s work. That means you’re sure to see something new even if you have visited here before. Take the metro to the Iena or Alma stations.

The Cluny Museum

Set amidst the 19th and 20th century attractions of the Left Bank are ruins of the old GalloRoman baths from the Roman city of Lutece. These artifacts are part of the structure that makes up the Cluny Museum officially the Musee National du Moyen Age middle Ages.

This peaceful spot houses the elegant 15th century “Lady with a Unicorn” tapestries wonderfully displayed in a round gallery space. The Cluny also boasts the “Gallery of the Kings” a collection of 21 of the original 28 stone heads of the Kings of Judah carved in the 13th century and found during excavations in 1977 near the Place de l’Opera. Together with handlettered manuscripts gold artifacts and other stone carvings they form the world’s finest collection of Medieval art.

Periodic medieval poetry readings and concerts held at the museum are a special treat. Take the Metro to Cluny StMichel or Odeon.
