Few holiday islands offer as much to do and see as Lanzarote – located in the Canary Islands just off the coast of West Africa.

Much of the islands popularity can be attributed to the fact that the weather in Lanzarote is fantastic all year round. Even during December and January visitors are still able to bask in temperatures in the 70´s by the pool or on the beach. And the proximity of the Canaries to mainland Europe – just a four hour flight away – has made them a hot favourite with tourists there.

Lanzarote certainly has plenty more than just the weather to recommend it as a great holiday destination. There are some fantastic places to stay – with a wide range of Lanzarote holiday villas, apartments and hotels available to visitors. The best of which are concentrated in the main tourist resorts of Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen.

Getting round the island is easy too. As it’s very small and the roads are quiet. Making it possible to drive from one end to the other in little under an hour. Car hire in Lanzarote is cheap too – so touring the island is as easy as it is inexpensive.

What are the main sights? Nobody should miss the Timanfaya National Park – home to Lanzarote´s volcanoes. Which first erupted and appeared some 250 years ago. Leaving about one third of the island covered in lava and looking like another planet altogether.

Beach lovers will be delighted to find that there are close to 100 perfect playas around the island. And unlike many other Canary Islands all of these boast golden grains rather than black sand. Some of the beaches in the main resorts are man made though – using sand imported from the Sahara desert which is only around 100km away.

Many visitors are also extremely impressed by the work of the artist Cesar Manrique. Who was born on Lanzarote in 1919 and went onto have a huge influence on the development of tourism on the island. As whilst recognising its economic importance he feared it’s cultural and environmental impact. Leading him to lobby successfully for a ban on high rise buildings which still remains in place to this day.

Manrique also created unique visitor attractions such as the Jameos del Agua and the Cactus Garden which have become the most popular tourist sights on Lanzarote.
