The city of Thebes was home to the pharaohs of the Middle and New Kingdoms of ancient Egypt. As such it contained remarkable temples tombs and structures dedicated to this remarkable period in history.

Today Thebes is known as Luxor and it is one of the most popular destinations for visitors from around the world. Though only a small city the area is spread out across a wide distance and contains the enormous Valley of the Kings as well as the smaller Valley of the Queens the Luxor Temple and the Temple of Karnak. It is also home to a museum and many shops restaurants and hotels that serve the needs of the many travelers.

Luxor tours take place nearly around the clock with visitors arriving by plane train boat and even horsedrawn carriage. The site is split by the Nile and the most wellknown locations reside along the western shore though the East Bank does contain the Temples of Luxor and Karnak which are included in all Luxor tours.

The Temple of Karnak is most known for its famous Hypostyle Hall while the Temple of Luxor is recognized as the work of the great pharaohs Amenhotep III and Ramesses the Great who was one of the most active creators or monuments throughout the history of the country.

Of course most visitors on Luxor tours will visit both shores and the West Bank is home to the ever popular Valley of the Kings where such famous rulers as Tutankhamun and Thutmose III were laid to rest. It is also the area which houses the Valley of the Queens which is home to the tomb of Nefertari and is also where Luxor tours take visitors to the tombs of the many nobles and workers who spent their lives and eternity dedicated to their pharaohs. It is also the location of the Temple of Hatshepsut and Deir el Bahri which is where the famous cache of royal mummies was discovered in 1871.

It is important to be well prepared for Luxor tours which means carrying ample supplies of water as the location can be remarkably hot and dry. It is also important to wear protective clothing to avoid sunburn. Many visitors enjoying Luxor tours also carry a pocket flashlight for the poorly lit interiors of some of the most beautiful tombs and a nice supply of paper currency with which to reward the guards who guide them into some of the more difficult areas.

It is also a good idea to do some basic research to complement Luxor tours as this was a very active region for many centuries and is home to some truly remarkable history.
