Nisyros is one of the small islands of Dodecanese which is south of Kos and only 8 m. from Kos. Although it is small it is a framework with natural beauties and gifted with an ancient cultural heritage. In the island of Nisyros natural beauty glorious historical past cultural tradition and popular civilization have gone with simple man of every day’s hard work.
The characteristic element of Nisyros is its volcano which has uniqueness in Greece and a special natural beauty beyond the scientific interest that make it a sight of a big importance. The island is famous for its thermal springs for their properties even from the time of the father of medicine Hippocrates.
Ideal place to enjoy swimming is the near island which is called Giali Glass. You can have a sense of unconcern and freedom walking on the huge sandy beach of this island.
A visiit to Nisyros is truly enchanting. Visitors to Nisyros will have a chance to sample the social and cultural life of the island. They may well be invited to weddings or christenings or to the feasting that follows. In addition a large range of folklore and cultural activities take place on Nisyros especially in summer.
In the evenings the visitors can enjoy the seafront tavernas the ouzo or retsina with local titbits snacks. These tavernas are much frequented by the ordinary people of the island fishermen farmers workers. Leaving the island don’t forget to take with you the traditional “soumada” and a jar of “thimarisio” honey.
